9 Dimensions

A comprehensive team diagnostic that evaluates group health across nine specific areas like trust, conflict, and commitment. It provides a visual 'map' of where the team is strong and where they need to focus their development.

When to use 9 Dimensions

To facilitate a deep-dive retrospective on team dynamics and interpersonal relationships.

What it solves

Vague feelings of 'team issues' without a clear way to diagnose or discuss them.

How to run 9 Dimensions, step by step

  1. Introduce the 9 dimensions (e.g., Trust, Goals, Roles, Leadership, etc.) (10 mins).
  2. Individuals privately rate the team on a scale of 1-10 for each dimension (10 mins).
  3. Plot the individual scores on a shared radar chart to see the spread (10 mins).
  4. Facilitate a discussion on the dimensions with the lowest scores or the widest spread (30-60 mins).

Materials needed

  • Radar chart template
  • Markers
  • Scoring sheets

Facilitator tips

  • The 'spread' (difference between high and low scores) is often more interesting than the average score.
  • Ensure a safe environment where people feel they can be honest with their ratings.

Common pitfalls

  • Groupthink leading to everyone giving 'safe' middle-of-the-road scores.
  • Not leaving enough time for the discussion phase.

Variations

  • Can be adapted to '6 Dimensions' for a shorter, more focused session.

Running it online or hybrid

Use a radar chart or spider diagram in a digital whiteboard for visual mapping.

What it produces

A radar chart showing the team's collective assessment of their performance across 9 dimensions.
