Active Intros

Active Intros is a dynamic icebreaker that combines personal introductions with physical movement, creating an engaging and energetic start to any group session. It encourages participation and breaks down barriers through playful activity.

When to use Active Intros

Use this method at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to energize participants and foster a sense of connection and shared experience, especially in large groups.

What it solves

Lack of energy at the start of a session, participants feeling disconnected or hesitant to engage.

How to run Active Intros, step by step

  1. Prepare an alphabet chart with associated movements/sounds for each letter. (5 minutes)
  2. Invite everyone to stand and explain the activity. (2 minutes)
  3. Ask participants to spell their first name (or a chosen word) by performing the action for each letter. (5-10 minutes)
  4. Optionally, repeat with different words or phrases. (5 minutes)

Materials needed

  • Alphabet chart with associated movements/sounds (physical or digital)

Facilitator tips

  • Encourage participants to be creative and expressive with their movements.
  • Model the actions clearly to ensure everyone understands.

Common pitfalls

  • Participants feeling self-conscious about performing the actions. Create a supportive and playful atmosphere to encourage participation.
  • The activity taking too long. Set a clear time limit for each round.

Variations

  • Use different categories of words (e.g., favorite food, dream vacation).
