Behaviour Change Wheel

The Behaviour Change Wheel is a structured method for identifying obstacles to a desired behavior and generating targeted interventions. By systematically analyzing capability, opportunity, and motivation, it helps teams design effective solutions for behavior change challenges.

When to use Behaviour Change Wheel

Use this method when you need to understand the underlying reasons why a specific behavior isn't happening and to develop interventions that address those root causes. It's particularly useful when dealing with complex behavior change challenges in service design or organizational development.

What it solves

Lack of understanding of why people are not behaving in a desired way; generating ineffective or generic interventions.

How to run Behaviour Change Wheel, step by step

  1. Define the target behavior clearly. (5 minutes)
  2. Analyze the behavior using the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation). Break down each component into sub-categories. (30 minutes)
  3. Identify specific blockers related to each category and sub-category, based on research and insights. (30 minutes)
  4. Brainstorm design interventions to address each blocker. (45 minutes)

Materials needed

  • Whiteboard or digital whiteboard
  • Markers or digital pens
  • Sticky notes (optional)
  • COM-B model template

Facilitator tips

  • Encourage participants to be specific when identifying blockers.
  • Use real-world examples to illustrate the COM-B model components.
  • Remind participants to consider all three components (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation) equally.

Common pitfalls

  • Superficial analysis of the COM-B components. - Encourage deeper exploration and probing questions.
  • Focusing solely on one component (e.g., Motivation) and neglecting others. - Remind participants to consider all three equally.

Variations

  • Use the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) for a more detailed analysis of behavioral determinants.
  • Prioritize blockers based on their impact and feasibility before generating interventions.

Running it online or hybrid

Use a digital whiteboard like Miro or Mural to collaboratively capture blockers and generate intervention ideas.

What it produces

A prioritized list of behavioral blockers and a corresponding set of design interventions to address them.
