Check-in / Check-out

Check-in/Check-out is a simple yet powerful method to start and end meetings or workshops by inviting each participant to share a feeling, reflection, or intention. This practice fosters presence, focus, and a sense of closure, enhancing group cohesion and individual well-being.

When to use Check-in / Check-out

Use this method at the beginning of a meeting to set the tone and encourage active participation, or at the end to consolidate learning and provide a sense of completion.

What it solves

Lack of focus at the start of meetings; unresolved feelings or thoughts lingering after a session.

How to run Check-in / Check-out, step by step

  1. (2 min) Explain the purpose of the check-in/check-out and the ground rules for sharing (e.g., be concise, listen respectfully).
  2. (3-25 min) Invite each participant to respond to a specific prompt related to the session's goals or their current state. Go around the circle or call on individuals.
  3. (Ongoing) Actively listen to each participant's contribution without interruption or judgment.
  4. (Optional - 1 min) Briefly summarize key themes or insights that emerged during the check-in/check-out.

Facilitator tips

  • Prepare a few different check-in/check-out prompts in advance to suit the group and session goals.
  • Be mindful of time and gently guide participants to be concise.
  • Model vulnerability by sharing your own check-in/check-out response first.

Common pitfalls

  • Participants dominating the conversation or going off-topic. Gently redirect them back to the prompt.
  • Participants feeling pressured to share. Emphasize that participation is voluntary.

Variations

  • Use visual prompts (images, objects) instead of verbal prompts.
  • Incorporate a brief mindfulness exercise before the check-in.
  • Allow participants to pass if they are not comfortable sharing.

Running it online or hybrid

For remote sessions, have participants share in the order they appear on screen or call on individuals to ensure everyone participates.

What it produces

A shared understanding of individual states and a collective sense of closure.
