Chopsticks
Chopsticks is a quick and engaging finger-counting game that promotes strategic thinking and interaction. This partner activity requires no equipment and scales easily for large groups, making it ideal for developing mental math skills and focused engagement.
When to use Chopsticks
Use this method as a quick icebreaker or energizer to foster interaction and lighthearted competition within a large group. It's particularly useful when you need a no-prep activity to boost engagement and focus.
What it solves
Lack of engagement at the start of a session; difficulty getting participants to interact with each other.
How to run Chopsticks, step by step
- Form pairs and have them face each other. Each person extends the pointer finger of each hand. (1 minute)
- Determine who goes first. Explain that the 'tapper' will tap one of their partner's fingers, adding the number of fingers used to the 'tappee'. (1 minute)
- When a tap pushes a hand's finger count above four, that hand is eliminated. A person can transfer fingers between hands on their turn. (2 minutes)
- The goal is to eliminate both of the partner's hands. Play multiple rounds and swap partners. (1 minute)
Facilitator tips
- Emphasize the strategic element of transferring fingers between hands.
- Encourage participants to be mindful of their partner's finger count.
Common pitfalls
- Participants may forget the rules. Review them clearly before starting.
- Some participants may dominate the game. Encourage fair play and turn-taking.
Variations
- Allow players to use more than one finger to tap.
- Introduce a point system for winning rounds.
Running it online or hybrid
Participants can use video to show their fingers. Facilitator needs to clearly explain the rules and monitor progress.
