Count Up
A group challenge where participants must count from 1 to 20 collectively. The catch is that only one person can speak at a time, and there is no set order; if two people speak simultaneously, the group starts over.
When to use Count Up
To build group awareness, improve listening skills, and demonstrate the importance of 'space' in conversation.
What it solves
Participants talking over each other or a lack of conversational 'rhythm' in virtual meetings.
How to run Count Up, step by step
- Explain the rules: Count to 20, no speaking order, no two people at once (1 min).
- Begin the count. If a 'collision' occurs, the facilitator calls 'Reset' (5-8 mins).
- Once 20 is reached (or time is up), debrief the strategies used to succeed (2 mins).
Materials needed
- Audio-enabled video conferencing
Facilitator tips
- Don't let the group get frustrated; remind them that the 'failure' is the point of the exercise.
- Watch for 'cheating' (e.g., using the chat or hand signals).
Common pitfalls
- Audio lag causing 'false' collisions; as a facilitator, be the final judge but be fair.
Variations
- Eyes Closed: Have everyone close their eyes to heighten their auditory focus.
Running it online or hybrid
This is significantly harder online due to audio lag, making it an excellent lesson in patience and presence.
What it produces
A shared sense of accomplishment and improved group focus.
