How to run Cynefin Framework, step by step

  1. Introduce the Cynefin Framework and its five domains (Clear, Complicated, Complex, Chaotic, Disorder). (5 minutes)
  2. Present the problem or situation to the group. (5 minutes)
  3. Facilitate a discussion to determine which domain best describes the problem. Use guiding questions like: Do we know what causes the situation? Is it under control? How much do we know? (20 minutes)
  4. Based on the identified domain, discuss and agree on the appropriate action strategy: Sense-Categorize-Respond (Clear), Sense-Analyze-Respond (Complicated), Probe-Sense-Respond (Complex), Act-Sense-Respond (Chaotic), Domain Identification (Disorder). (20 minutes)
  5. Document the agreed-upon domain and action strategy. (10 minutes)
