Design Thinking Modes Exploration
This method introduces participants to the five core modes of Design Thinking (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) and encourages them to explore how these modes can be applied to a specific challenge. It's effective for building a foundational understanding of the design thinking process and fostering a mindset of iterative problem-solving.
When to use Design Thinking Modes Exploration
Use this method at the beginning of a design thinking workshop or project to familiarize participants with the core principles and stages of the process.
What it solves
Lack of shared understanding of the design thinking process, teams jumping to solutions without proper problem definition.
How to run Design Thinking Modes Exploration, step by step
- Briefly introduce the five modes of Design Thinking (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test). (5 minutes)
- Divide participants into smaller groups and assign each group one or more modes to explore. (5 minutes)
- Each group discusses what the assigned mode entails, its importance, and how it can be applied to the current challenge. (15 minutes)
- Each group shares their insights with the larger group. (20 minutes)
- Facilitate a discussion on how the five modes are interconnected and how they can be used iteratively. (15 minutes)
Materials needed
- Whiteboard or digital whiteboard
- Markers or digital pens
- Copies of the Design Thinking Bootleg (digital or print)
Facilitator tips
- Encourage participants to share real-world examples of how they have used or seen these modes applied.
- Emphasize the iterative nature of the design thinking process.
Common pitfalls
- Participants getting stuck on one mode and not seeing the bigger picture.
- Ensure that all five modes are adequately explored and their interconnections are highlighted.
Variations
- Assign different challenges to each group to explore the modes in different contexts.
- Use visual aids or case studies to illustrate each mode.
Running it online or hybrid
Use breakout rooms for smaller group discussions and a shared digital whiteboard (Miro, Mural) to capture insights.
What it produces
A shared understanding of the five design thinking modes and their application to the project at hand.
