External Sound Scan

Participants remove their headsets to listen to the ambient sounds in their immediate physical location. This exercise breaks the digital immersion and grounds the individual in their actual surroundings.

When to use External Sound Scan

To reduce digital fatigue and reconnect participants with their physical reality during long workshops.

What it solves

Feeling 'trapped' in the screen or disconnected from reality.

How to run External Sound Scan, step by step

  1. Ask everyone to remove their headphones or mute their speakers. (30 sec)
  2. Instruct them to sit in silence and identify three distinct sounds in their room or outside their window. (2 min)
  3. Have everyone put their headsets back on and briefly share one sound in the chat. (1 min)

Materials needed

  • None

Facilitator tips

  • Remind them that 'distracting' sounds like traffic or pets are part of the practice, not interruptions.
  • Keep your own camera on but remain still.

Common pitfalls

  • Participants getting distracted and not coming back to the call promptly.
  • Technical issues when re-plugging headsets.

Variations

  • Focus only on the furthest sound they can hear, then the closest.

Running it online or hybrid

Crucial for remote workers to reconnect with their physical environment outside the 'Zoom box'.

What it produces

Heightened sensory awareness.
