Go-Round
The Go-Round ensures every participant has an equal opportunity to contribute by systematically moving around the group. This method promotes inclusivity and diverse perspectives in discussions.
When to use Go-Round
Use this at the beginning of a meeting to gather initial thoughts, or during a discussion when you need to hear from everyone.
What it solves
Unequal participation, dominant voices, quiet participants feeling unheard.
How to run Go-Round, step by step
- Explain the process: Each person will have a chance to speak without interruption. (2 minutes)
- Indicate the direction you'll be going around the circle. (1 minute)
- Go around the circle, giving each person a chance to speak. Offer a second round for those who wish to add more. (Varies based on group size)
Facilitator tips
- Give participants a moment to think before their turn.
- Gently redirect participants who dominate the conversation.
Common pitfalls
- Participants repeating what others have said. Encourage them to build on previous comments or offer new perspectives.
- The go-round taking too long. Set a time limit per person if necessary.
Variations
- Use a talking object to designate who has the floor.
- Allow participants to 'pass' if they don't have anything to add.
Running it online or hybrid
Use the 'raise hand' feature in Zoom or similar platforms to manage the speaking order.
What it produces
A collection of initial ideas or perspectives from all participants.
