When to use Graphic Jam

Use this method when you need to generate a wide range of visual ideas for abstract concepts, such as during logo development, presentation design, or metaphor creation for training materials.

How to run Graphic Jam, step by step

  1. Prepare a large display area (physical whiteboard or virtual equivalent) and provide sticky notes or digital equivalents to all participants. (5 minutes)
  2. Ask each participant to write down 1-2 words or short phrases that they find difficult to visualize on separate index cards. (5 minutes)
  3. Collect and shuffle the cards. Draw one card at random and read the word aloud to the group, then post it visibly. (2 minutes)
  4. Instruct participants to create a visual representation of the word on a sticky note. Emphasize that there are no wrong answers. (3 minutes)
  5. Have participants post their sticky notes under the corresponding word. (3 minutes)
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until most or all words have been visualized. Skip duplicates or synonyms. (15-30 minutes)
  7. Facilitate a group discussion, exploring different interpretations and the reasoning behind the visual choices. (10 minutes)
