Instigator
Instigator is a playful guessing game that sharpens observation skills and promotes non-verbal communication. Participants mimic a designated 'Instigator' while a 'Bunny' tries to identify them, fostering attentiveness and group synchronicity.
When to use Instigator
Use this activity as a quick energizer or icebreaker to encourage observation, non-verbal communication, and group awareness, especially when you need to boost energy levels and engagement.
What it solves
Lack of engagement in group activities, poor observation skills, difficulty with non-verbal communication.
How to run Instigator, step by step
- Ask one person to be the 'Bunny' and have them leave the room or close their eyes. (2 minutes)
- Secretly choose an 'Instigator' from the remaining group members. (1 minute)
- Instruct the group to walk randomly around the space while the Instigator makes deliberate movements that others mimic. (2 minutes)
- Have the 'Bunny' return and observe the group, trying to identify the Instigator within four attempts. (5 minutes)
- Rotate roles and repeat for multiple rounds. (5 minutes)
Facilitator tips
- Encourage the Instigator to change movements frequently to challenge the Bunny.
- Ensure the Bunny has a clear view of all participants.
Common pitfalls
- The Instigator is too obvious, making it easy for the Bunny to guess quickly. Encourage subtlety.
- The group doesn't mimic the Instigator well enough. Remind them to pay close attention and copy movements accurately.
Variations
- Introduce sound or vocal cues for the Instigator to mimic.
- Increase the number of Instigators to make it more challenging.
Running it online or hybrid
In virtual settings, use video conferencing to observe participants. The 'Bunny' can mute/unsee the screen while the instigator is chosen.
What it produces
Increased group cohesion and improved observation skills among participants.
