Letter Connection
Letter Connection is a dynamic icebreaker that uses alphabet cards to spark conversation and help participants discover commonalities. It encourages movement and guided discussions, making it ideal for new teams or strengthening existing relationships.
When to use Letter Connection
Use this method at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to help participants get to know each other and find common ground quickly. It's particularly useful when you want to create a relaxed and engaging atmosphere.
What it solves
Shyness or reluctance to participate in group activities, superficial introductions.
How to run Letter Connection, step by step
- Prepare alphabet cards (either print-and-play or create your own) and distribute one or two randomly to each participant. (5 minutes)
- Announce a category (e.g., same type of letter, favorite color, hobby). Instruct participants to find a partner or small group (max 3 people) who share that characteristic. (5 minutes)
- Pose a question related to the category and have each person share their response with their partner(s). (5 minutes)
- Announce a new category or repeat the previous one to encourage participants to interact with different people. (5 minutes)
Materials needed
- Alphabet cards (printed or digital)
Facilitator tips
- Encourage participants to move around and interact with as many people as possible.
- Prepare a variety of categories and questions to keep the activity engaging.
Common pitfalls
- Participants sticking with the same partner(s) throughout the activity.
- Ensure clear instructions and encourage movement.
Variations
- Use different types of cards (e.g., images, quotes) instead of letters.
- Focus on specific themes or topics related to the workshop or meeting.
Running it online or hybrid
Use breakout rooms in Zoom or similar platforms to facilitate small group discussions. Digital whiteboards can replace physical alphabet cards.
What it produces
Increased comfort and familiarity among participants, identification of shared interests.
