Letter to Future Self
At the end of an offsite, each person writes a private letter to themselves, seals it in a self-addressed envelope and hands it to the facilitator. The letters are posted back weeks or months later. The letter covers what has been hard, what they are taking away now, and what they want to see in themselves when they open it.
When to use Letter to Future Self
Use as the last activity of a retreat or programme, to keep commitments alive after the event glow wears off.
What it solves
Retreat insights fade within a fortnight of returning to the inbox, and nobody remembers what they promised themselves.
How to run Letter to Future Self, step by step
- Explain the exercise and when the letters will arrive, for example in three months (2 min).
- Prompt the first part: what has been difficult lately and what you have come through (5 min).
- Prompt the second part: what you are taking away from these days and why it matters to you (5 min).
- Prompt the third part: what you hope your future self has done, and a question to ask them (5 min).
- Seal and self-address the envelope. Collect the letters and post them on the agreed date (3 min).
Materials needed
- Writing paper and envelopes
- Stamps
- Pens
- A calendar reminder for the facilitator
Facilitator tips
- Promise privacy and keep it. Nobody else reads the letters.
- Pick a return date that lands when energy usually dips, such as two to three months later.
- A short note from the facilitator in the envelope helps the letter land.
Common pitfalls
- The facilitator forgets to send the letters, which costs more trust than not doing it.
- The writing time is squeezed into the last five minutes while people are packing.
Variations
- Paired letters: two people write to each other and exchange them later.
Running it online or hybrid
People write on paper or email it to the facilitator; the facilitator sends it back on the agreed date.
What it produces
A sealed letter that arrives at a set date after the event.
Origin
