Magical Gifts
A closing exercise where partners 'give' each other an imaginary, magical gift based on a strength or quality they observed during the session. It reinforces positive connections and leaves participants feeling valued.
When to use Magical Gifts
To end a workshop on a high note of mutual appreciation and to solidify new relationships.
What it solves
Sessions ending abruptly without closure or recognition of individual contributions.
How to run Magical Gifts, step by step
- Place participants in pairs (breakout rooms or in-person) (1 minute).
- Each person reflects on what they appreciate about their partner's contribution today (2 minutes).
- Partners take turns 'handing over' an imaginary gift that represents that strength (e.g., 'I give you a golden megaphone so your great ideas are always heard') (5-7 minutes).
Materials needed
- Breakout rooms
Facilitator tips
- Encourage participants to be as creative and 'magical' as possible with their gifts.
- Model a gift first to show that it can be whimsical yet meaningful.
Common pitfalls
- Participants being too literal; remind them the gift can be anything, regardless of the laws of physics.
Variations
- Themed gifts related to the project or workshop topic.
Running it online or hybrid
Works well in hybrid pairs if the audio connection is clear.
What it produces
Verbal affirmations of strengths and a positive emotional peak for the session.
