Movement Break
Two to ten minutes of deliberate physical movement between two cognitively heavy segments. Not a game, not a team-building exercise. A reset, so the next hour is not run on a body that has been seated for three.
When to use Movement Break
Use between two demanding segments, especially before work that requires honesty rather than analysis.
What it solves
Long seated sessions degrade the quality of the thinking in the second half, and nobody names it.
How to run Movement Break, step by step
- Name it as a reset, not a game. Adults resist forced fun and accept a reset (1 min).
- Stand. Move. Walk the room, stretch, change seats, or step outside (3-6 min).
- Return and start the next segment immediately, without recapping.
Materials needed
- Floor space
- A timer
Facilitator tips
- Change where people sit; the new neighbour matters more than the stretch.
- Offer a seated variation without asking who needs it.
- Online, ask people to stand and turn cameras off for three minutes.
Common pitfalls
- The break becomes a coffee queue and runs to twenty minutes. Set and hold the timer.
- Framing it as a game makes senior participants opt out and the reset fails.
What it produces
A room that is physically ready for the next segment.
Origin
A short physical reset. Used in the VERIFY method between cognitively heavy segments.
