Personas
Personas are archetypical users representing key segments of your target audience, bringing user research to life. They help teams empathize with users and make informed design decisions by grounding discussions in realistic user needs and behaviors.
When to use Personas
Use personas when you need to ensure that design and development decisions are user-centered, especially when dealing with complex user groups or when teams are losing sight of the end-user.
What it solves
Lack of user empathy, designing for 'average' users instead of specific needs, stakeholders making assumptions about users.
How to run Personas, step by step
- Conduct user research (interviews, surveys, observations) to gather data about your target audience. (30-60 minutes)
- Identify patterns and group users with similar behaviors, motivations, and goals. (30-60 minutes)
- Create a detailed profile for each persona, including a name, photo, demographics, motivations, goals, frustrations, and representative quotes. (30-60 minutes)
- Share the personas with the team and use them as a reference point for design decisions.
Materials needed
- User research data
- Whiteboard or virtual whiteboard
- Markers or digital pens
- Persona template (optional)
Facilitator tips
- Focus on behaviors and motivations, not just demographics.
- Keep the number of personas manageable (3-5 is ideal).
- Regularly revisit and update personas as you learn more about your users.
Common pitfalls
- Creating personas based on assumptions rather than research.
- Making personas too generic or stereotypical.
- Ignoring personas during the design process.
- Avoid enriching their descriptions with details that are not relevant in that context: they could be misleading.
Variations
- Proto-personas: Created based on initial assumptions before user research.
- Lightweight personas: Simplified versions with fewer details.
- Negative personas: Represent users you don't want to target.
Running it online or hybrid
Use a collaborative whiteboard tool like Miro or Mural to create and share personas. Encourage remote participants to add their insights and feedback in real-time.
What it produces
Detailed persona profiles including demographics, motivations, goals, frustrations, and representative quotes.
