Push Catch
Push Catch is a quick and playful energizer that sharpens focus and mental agility. Participants react to contradictory instructions under pressure, creating laughter and engagement.
When to use Push Catch
Use this activity to kick off a meeting or training session, especially when you need to boost energy levels and improve participants' ability to quickly process information.
What it solves
Lack of focus at the start of a session; participants not fully engaged.
How to run Push Catch, step by step
- Form a circle. The facilitator stands in the center with a ball. (2 minutes)
- Explain the rules: When the facilitator says 'PUSH,' the receiver must CATCH, and vice versa. (3 minutes)
- The facilitator throws the ball to a participant while calling out 'PUSH' or 'CATCH'. (5 minutes)
- If the receiver performs the wrong action, they are 'out' and leave the circle. (Ongoing)
- Continue until only one person remains, declaring them the winner. (Ongoing)
Materials needed
- A soft ball or similar object
Facilitator tips
- Start slowly to allow participants to grasp the concept.
- Vary the speed and tone of your instructions to keep participants on their toes.
- Encourage laughter and lightheartedness; it's okay to make mistakes.
Common pitfalls
- Participants may struggle with the concept initially. Be patient and provide clear examples.
- The game can become repetitive. Introduce variations to maintain interest.
Variations
- Introduce more instructions (e.g., 'LEFT,' 'RIGHT') with corresponding actions.
- Allow eliminated players to re-enter the game after a certain number of rounds.
- Play without elimination, focusing on individual performance and improvement.
Running it online or hybrid
