Shift and Share
Shift and Share is a dynamic method for fostering connection and understanding within a group. By rotating partners and posing conversation starters, it encourages active listening and the sharing of diverse perspectives.
When to use Shift and Share
Use Shift and Share at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to build rapport, surface initial thoughts on a topic, or encourage cross-pollination of ideas between participants.
What it solves
Siloed thinking, lack of cross-departmental communication, superficial networking.
How to run Shift and Share, step by step
- Divide the group into two lines facing each other, creating pairs. (2 minutes)
- Introduce the first conversation starter question. (1 minute)
- Instruct pairs to discuss the question, ensuring each person has a chance to answer. (5 minutes)
- Signal the end of the discussion time and instruct one line to shift one person to their right, creating new pairs. (2 minutes)
- Introduce a new question or repeat the same question. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for desired number of rounds. (Varies)
Materials needed
- Conversation starter questions
- Timer
- Music (optional)
Facilitator tips
- Clearly signal the start and end of each conversation round using a timer, music, or verbal cues.
- Adjust the depth of the conversation starters based on the group's comfort level and the session's objectives.
- Encourage participants to continue conversations after the exercise.
Common pitfalls
- Uneven participation: Encourage quieter participants to share and manage dominant voices.
- Superficial conversations: Craft thoughtful conversation starters that encourage deeper reflection.
Variations
- Use visual prompts instead of verbal questions.
- Have participants share a skill or piece of knowledge with each new partner.
- Use different movement patterns (e.g., rotating in a circle) instead of lines.
Running it online or hybrid
Use breakout rooms in pairs, ensure clear timing signals for switching. Consider a shared document for capturing key takeaways.
What it produces
Increased sense of connection among participants, shared understanding of diverse perspectives, potential for follow-up conversations.
