Story Swap
Story Swap is a creative icebreaker that encourages spontaneous storytelling and active listening. Participants use visual prompts to inspire short narratives, fostering imagination and building confidence in a supportive environment.
When to use Story Swap
Use this method at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to energize the group, encourage creative thinking, and build rapport among participants.
What it solves
Overcoming initial hesitation to speak up in a group; stimulating creative thinking when participants feel stuck.
How to run Story Swap, step by step
- Distribute one image card (face down) to each participant. Instruct them not to look at the image yet. (2 minutes)
- Form pairs randomly. (1 minute)
- One person in each pair shows their image to their partner. The partner then shares a short story inspired by the image. (3-4 minutes per person)
- The partners switch roles, with the other person sharing their image and inspiring a story. (3-4 minutes per person)
- (Optional) Have pairs swap partners and repeat the exercise with new images. (2 minutes)

- Use a single image and have the whole group contribute to a collaborative story.
- Adapt the images to align with the workshop's theme or topic.
