The Four Quadrants
The Four Quadrants is a simple icebreaker that encourages team members to share personal or professional information based on four prompts. It's a quick and engaging way to foster connection and identify commonalities within a group.
When to use The Four Quadrants
Use this method at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to help participants get to know each other and create a more comfortable and collaborative environment.
What it solves
Shyness or reluctance to participate in group activities; superficial introductions.
How to run The Four Quadrants, step by step
- Prepare a slide or whiteboard with four quadrants, each labeled with a different prompt (e.g., 'Favorite hobby,' 'Dream vacation,' 'Biggest challenge,' 'Proudest accomplishment'). (5 min)
- Instruct participants to individually reflect on each prompt and write down their answers. (5 min)
- Have participants share their answers in small groups or with the whole group. (15-20 min)
Materials needed

- Uneven participation. Encourage quieter members to share.
Variations
- Use images instead of text prompts.
