The Mental Declutter

A guided visualization where participants identify current mental distractions and consciously 'park' them outside the meeting space. This creates a psychological boundary that protects the focus of the group.

When to use The Mental Declutter

Use when the team is coming off a high-stress period or back-to-back meetings.

What it solves

Mental clutter and 'attention residue' from previous tasks.

How to run The Mental Declutter, step by step

  1. Ask participants to close their eyes or soften their gaze. (30 sec)
  2. Prompt them to identify one worry or to-do item they brought into the call. (30 sec)
  3. Instruct them to 'give themselves permission' to set that item aside for the duration of the meeting. (1 min)

Facilitator tips

  • Use a calm, steady tone of voice.
  • Emphasize that they aren't ignoring the problems, just pausing them.

Common pitfalls

  • Dismissing the importance of the participants' outside stressors.
  • Not giving enough time for the visualization.

Variations

  • Have participants write the distraction on a piece of paper and physically turn it over.

Running it online or hybrid
