Think-Pair-Share

Think-Pair-Share encourages individual reflection followed by collaborative discussion, promoting active participation and deeper understanding of a topic. It's a simple yet powerful method to engage all participants, even in large groups.

When to use Think-Pair-Share

Use this method to quickly generate ideas, explore different perspectives on a question, or consolidate learning after a presentation or reading.

What it solves

Uneven participation, superficial discussion, lack of initial engagement.

How to run Think-Pair-Share, step by step

  1. **Think (1-2 minutes):** Pose a question or problem. Ask participants to individually reflect and jot down their thoughts.
  2. **Pair (2-3 minutes):** Have participants pair up with someone nearby or in a breakout room. Ask them to share their individual thoughts and discuss the question together.
  3. **Share (2-5 minutes):** Facilitate a whole-group discussion, inviting pairs to share their key insights or conclusions. Capture these on a whiteboard or shared document.

Materials needed

  • Question or prompt
  • Timer
  • Whiteboard or shared document (for recording shared ideas)

Facilitator tips

  • Provide a clear and focused question to guide the thinking process.
  • Actively listen during the share phase and probe for deeper understanding.

Common pitfalls

  • Pairs getting off-topic: Remind participants to focus on the question at hand.
  • Unequal participation in pairs: Encourage active listening and equal speaking time.

Variations

  • Think-Pair-Write-Share: Add a writing component before pairing.
  • Think-Pair-Square-Share: Pairs join another pair to form a group of four before sharing with the whole group.

Running it online or hybrid

Use breakout rooms for pairing and a shared document or whiteboard for sharing.

What it produces

Shared understanding, diverse perspectives, initial ideas or solutions.
