Three Action Steps

This method helps participants translate insights from a meeting or workshop into concrete, personal action plans. It ensures accountability and follow-through by focusing on achievable next steps.

When to use Three Action Steps

Use this method at the end of a session to help participants internalize learning and commit to implementing changes in their work or personal lives.

What it solves

Lack of follow-through after meetings, vague commitments, feeling overwhelmed by too many ideas.

How to run Three Action Steps, step by step

  1. Individual Reflection (5 minutes). Ask each participant to silently reflect on the key takeaways and insights from the session.
  2. Identify Action Steps (10 minutes). Instruct participants to identify three specific, actionable steps they can take to apply what they've learned. Encourage them to make these steps realistic and measurable.
  3. Share and Commit (10-15 minutes). Have participants share their action steps in small groups or with the whole group. Encourage them to make a verbal commitment to completing these steps.

Materials needed

  • Paper or digital document for each participant
  • Timer
  • Whiteboard or shared online document (optional)

Facilitator tips

  • Emphasize the importance of making the action steps specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).
  • Encourage participants to support each other in completing their action steps.

Common pitfalls

  • Participants struggle to identify concrete action steps. Provide examples and encourage them to start small.
  • Participants make overly ambitious commitments. Remind them to focus on achievable steps.

Variations

  • Have participants publicly commit to their action steps by writing them on a shared whiteboard.
  • Pair participants up as accountability partners to check in on their progress.

Running it online or hybrid

Use a shared document or whiteboard tool like Miro or Mural for participants to record and share their action steps.

What it produces
