Tweener

Tweener is a fast-paced, engaging group game that promotes quick reflexes and collective celebration. It's effective for injecting energy into a group and fostering a playful competitive spirit.

When to use Tweener

Use this method when you need a quick and easy way to energize a group, especially in a small space, and encourage lighthearted interaction.

What it solves

Low energy levels, lack of engagement, need for a quick and fun activity.

How to run Tweener, step by step

  1. Have participants form a circle, standing shoulder-width apart with their feet touching their neighbors' feet. (2 minutes)
  2. Explain that the space between each person's legs is their 'goal' and must be defended. (1 minute)
  3. Start the game by hitting an inflatable ball into the circle, instructing players to hit the ball with an open palm. (1 minute)
  4. When a goal is scored (ball passes between someone's legs), everyone shouts 'GOOOOAAAALLLL!' (Ongoing)
  5. As a penalty, after the first goal, the person puts one arm behind their back. After the second, they put both arms behind their back. After the third, they turn around. (Ongoing)
  6. If the ball exits the circle between two players ('tweener'), all players regain the use of their arms or turn forward. (Ongoing)
  7. Continue playing as long as the group is enjoying the game. (Variable)

Materials needed

  • Inflatable ball

Facilitator tips

  • Emphasize the open palm rule to prevent injuries.
  • Encourage enthusiastic goal celebrations.

Common pitfalls

  • Players using fists to hit the ball (leads to injury).
  • Players not paying attention and getting hit by the ball.

Variations

  • Create teams and have them pass the ball to each other before attempting a goal.
  • Assign points for successful defenses.

Running it online or hybrid

Requires a virtual space where participants can see each other and react in real-time. Adapt by using a shared virtual whiteboard with designated 'goal' areas for each participant.

What it produces

Increased group energy and engagement, improved reaction time.
