Virtual Follow the Leader
A physical synchronization exercise where the group mimics the movements of a designated leader in real-time. This shifts the group from a sedentary, cognitive state into a more present, embodied state.
When to use Virtual Follow the Leader
To break 'Zoom fatigue' and re-energize the group during long sessions or transitions.
What it solves
Physical stagnation and mental fatigue during long virtual workshops.
How to run Virtual Follow the Leader, step by step
- Designate one person as the movement leader (30 seconds).
- The leader performs simple movements (stretching, waving, clapping) while everyone else mirrors them exactly (2 minutes).
- The leader 'passes' the leadership to another participant by calling their name (2 minutes).
Materials needed
- Working cameras for all participants
Facilitator tips
- Encourage leaders to keep movements within the camera frame.
- Use upbeat music in the background to enhance the energy.
Common pitfalls
- Participants feeling self-conscious; the facilitator should lead with high energy to set the tone.
- Movements that are too fast for the video lag to handle.
Variations
- Follow the Follower: No designated leader; the group tries to move in unison by sensing the collective flow.
Running it online or hybrid
Ensure the camera frame is wide enough for in-person participants to be seen clearly.
What it produces
Increased group alertness and physical synchronization.
