Week-Ahead and Weekly Wrap Updates

Status meetings are replaced by two short updates per person each week. On Monday, a week-ahead update gives the top three priorities, why they matter and what help is needed. On Friday, a weekly wrap covers what was achieved, its impact and who deserves credit. Teammates react and reply in the thread.

When to use Week-Ahead and Weekly Wrap Updates

Use when a distributed team spends hours a week in status meetings that mainly move information around.

What it solves

Weekly status meetings take everyone's time to tell each person things they could have read in two minutes.

How to run Week-Ahead and Weekly Wrap Updates, step by step

  1. Agree the channel, the days and the template with the team (15 min, once).
  2. Monday: each person picks their top three priorities, the reason for each, and one specific request for help (10 min).
  3. Record a 3-5 minute video or write a short post, and share it (5 min).
  4. Teammates react, answer requests and ask questions in the thread during the day (5 min).
  5. Friday: each person shares what they achieved, its impact and who to thank (10 min).
  6. The lead replies to every update, even briefly, and flags anything that needs a live conversation.

Materials needed

  • Team channel or shared page
  • Video message tool or written template

Facilitator tips

  • Camera on in video updates; Atlassian's data showed a stronger sense of connection to the manager than with written ones.
  • Perfection is not required. A rough two-minute video beats a polished one that never gets made.
  • Make a habit of responding. Updates that get no reply stop being sent.

Common pitfalls

  • Updates turn into long lists of everything done, which nobody reads.
  • The team keeps the old status meeting as well, so this becomes extra work.

Variations

  • Written-only version for teams that prefer text or work in many languages.

Running it online or hybrid

Entirely async. Updates are posted as a 3-5 minute video message or short written post in the team channel or a shared page.

What it produces

A weekly thread of priorities and wraps that doubles as a searchable progress log.
