GRPI Model of Team Effectiveness

GRPI is a team effectiveness model with four levels: Goals, Roles, Processes and Interpersonal relationships. Its core claim is diagnostic: problems at higher levels cause problems lower down, so a team should clarify goals and roles before working on relationships.

When to use GRPI Model of Team Effectiveness

When forming a new team, starting a project, or when a team shows conflict that may have structural causes rather than personal ones.

How GRPI Model of Team Effectiveness works

Use it to structure a team kick-off or team health session: one block per level, in order, with each block producing agreements. It can also frame a short pre-session survey to find where the team is stuck.

Phases of GRPI Model of Team Effectiveness

  1. Goals: Check whether the team agrees on its purpose, priorities and expected results. Start diagnosis here, because unclear goals cause problems further down.
  2. Roles: Clarify who is responsible for what, with what authority, and whether people accept their roles.
  3. Processes: Look at how the team makes decisions, communicates, runs meetings and handles work flow.
  4. Interpersonal relationships: Address trust, openness and how people work together, after checking that the problem does not stem from goals, roles or processes.

Key principles

  • Diagnose from the top: goals first
  • Many interpersonal conflicts have structural causes
  • Make agreements explicit
  • Revisit as the team and its task change

Best for

  • Team kick-offs and chartering
  • Project team launches
  • Team health checks
  • Cross-functional teams

Considerations

  • A simple diagnostic heuristic; it has not been extensively validated as a predictive model.
  • Can underplay context such as leadership, resources and organisational culture.
  • The top-down order is a rule of thumb; genuine interpersonal issues still need direct attention.
