PAH Continuum (Pedagogy-Andragogy-Heutagogy)

The PAH Continuum is a developmental framework that maps the progression of learner autonomy. It illustrates how learners can transition from highly structured, instructor-led environments (Pedagogy) to collaborative, self-directed experiences (Andragogy), and ultimately to fully autonomous, self-determined learning (Heutagogy) as they gain competence and confidence.

Ideal for designing multi-stage training programs, onboarding pathways, and long-term academic curricula where learners start with zero domain knowledge and must progress to expert, self-directed practitioners.

How PAH Continuum (Pedagogy-Andragogy-Heutagogy) works

Instructional designers can use this continuum to scaffold long-term programs. Start with pedagogical structures to establish core concepts, transition to andragogical methods (like case studies and group projects) as learners gain confidence, and conclude with heutagogical projects where learners define their own goals and assessments.

  1. Pedagogy (Teacher-directed learning: building foundational knowledge and skills)
  2. Andragogy (Learner-directed learning: structured self-direction and collaborative problem-solving)
