How to run Bias Brainstorm, step by step

  1. Introduce the concept of bias and its relevance to international environments (5 minutes).
  2. Divide participants into small groups (4-5 people) (5 minutes).
  3. Instruct each group to brainstorm different types of biases they have observed or experienced (15 minutes).
  4. Have each group share their findings with the larger group (5 minutes).
  5. Facilitate a discussion to categorize and prioritize the identified biases (5 minutes).

Facilitator tips

  • Encourage participants to share personal experiences to make the discussion relatable.
  • Remind participants to be respectful of different perspectives and avoid judgment.
  • Use visual aids like a whiteboard or flip chart to capture ideas and themes.

Common challenges

  • Participants may hesitate to share their biases - Emphasize the importance of creating a safe and non-judgmental space.
  • The discussion may become too abstract - Provide concrete examples of biases in international settings.
  • Some participants may dominate the discussion - Use a round-robin approach to ensure everyone has a chance to speak.

Running it virtually

Use a virtual whiteboard tool like Miro or Mural to facilitate the brainstorming session. Encourage participants to use digital sticky notes to share their ideas.

Expected results

A comprehensive list of biases relevant to international environments, categorized by type and impact. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the prevalence and potential consequences of biases.
