Materials needed

How to run Dark Matter Lotus, step by step

1. Introduce the central product theme and place it in the center of the grid (2 min).
2. Instruct participants to silently generate 8 core sub-themes or user needs around the center (3 min).
3. Transfer each of the 8 sub-themes to the center of their own surrounding 3x3 grids (2 min).
4. Set the timer for 10 minutes for the main ideation sprint.
5. Direct participants to silently write one feature idea per sticky note for each sub-theme.
6. Enforce the rule of quantity, reminding the room that no idea is too absurd during this phase.
7. Monitor the energy in the room and provide a 2-minute warning before the sprint ends.
8. Instruct participants to stop writing and step back from the boards (1 min).
9. Guide a brief gallery walk where participants read the generated ideas without speaking (5 min).
10. Conclude by asking participants to mentally note patterns they observed for the next phase (2 min).

Facilitator tips

• Play ambient, instrumental music at a low volume to reduce the awkwardness of silent writing.
• If a group stalls, prompt them with 'What is the absolute worst version of this feature?' to unblock them.
• Ensure everyone uses thick markers so ideas can be read from a distance during the gallery walk.
• Actively prevent any talking or critiquing during the generation phase to maintain psychological safety.
• Keep the time pressure high; the slight stress prevents overthinking and perfectionism.

Common challenges

• Participants start discussing ideas instead of writing - Gently remind them of the silent rule and point to the timer.
• Blank page syndrome on sub-themes - Have 3-4 backup sub-themes prepared in your back pocket to seed struggling groups.
• Writing essays on sticky notes - Interrupt and demonstrate how to write a 3-word headline instead.
• People finishing too early - Challenge them to fill the negative space with 'wildcard' ideas.
