Empathy Mapping

Empathy Mapping helps teams develop a deeper understanding of their target users by exploring what users say, think, do, and feel. It fosters empathy and informs design decisions.

What participants gain

  • Understand the key components of an empathy map.
  • Develop empathy for the user's perspective.
  • Identify user needs and pain points.
  • Inform design decisions based on user insights.

Materials needed

  • A3 paper
  • Colored markers
  • Post-it notes 3x3
  • Timer app
  • Whiteboard or large paper
  • User persona descriptions

How to run Empathy Mapping, step by step

  2. Introduce the user persona (5 minutes).
  3. Guide participants to fill out the empathy map, focusing on what the user says, thinks, does, and feels (15 minutes).
  4. Discuss the key insights from the empathy map (5 minutes).
  5. Synthesize key insights and identify opportunities for improvement.

Facilitator tips

  • Encourage participants to focus on a specific user persona.
  • Use real user data to inform the empathy map.
  • Create a safe space for participants to share their insights.

Common challenges

  • Participants struggle to empathize with the user - Encourage them to role-play as the user.
  • The empathy map becomes too generic - Focus on specific user behaviors and motivations.
  • Difficulty identifying user emotions - Prompt participants with specific questions about feelings.

Running it virtually

Use a shared online whiteboard tool like Miro or Mural. Participants can collaboratively add sticky notes to the digital canvas to populate the empathy map.

Expected results

A completed empathy map that captures key insights into the user's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the user's perspective and needs.
