Indaba Circle of Voices
This method uses the principles of the South African Indaba to create a safe space for open and honest dialogue about team tensions. Participants sit in a circle and take turns speaking, guided by a talking object.
What participants gain
- Participants will be able to articulate their perspectives on current team dynamics and challenges.
- Participants will gain a deeper understanding of their teammates' viewpoints regarding team tensions and communication breakdowns.

Materials needed
- A talking object (e.g., a stone, a feather, a small toy)
- A comfortable space where participants can sit in a circle
- A timer
- A whiteboard or flip chart (optional)

How to run Indaba Circle of Voices, step by step
- Introduce the activity and its purpose (5 min).
- Explain the principles of the Indaba and the importance of respectful communication (5 min).
- Invite participants to sit in a circle and pass the talking object around the circle (2 min).
- When a participant holds the talking object, they have the floor to speak without interruption (5 min).
- Encourage participants to share their perspectives on current team dynamics and challenges (10 min).
- After each participant has spoken, facilitate a brief discussion about the key themes and insights that emerged (8 min).
- Thank participants for their honest feedback and participation (5 min).
- Remind participants to respect each other's perspectives and avoid interrupting or judging each other (2 min).
- Explain the guidelines for using the talking object: Only the person holding the object can speak, and they should speak from their own experience and perspective (2 min).
Facilitator tips
- Clearly explain the principles of the Indaba and the importance of respectful communication.
- Ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to speak and that no one dominates the discussion.
- Encourage participants to listen actively and empathetically to each other's perspectives.
- Remind participants to focus on their own experiences and feelings, rather than blaming or criticizing others.
- Summarize the key themes and insights that emerge from the discussion.
Common challenges
- Participants may be hesitant to share their honest opinions due to fear of judgment. Emphasize the importance of psychological safety and confidentiality.
- Some participants may dominate the discussion. Use the talking object to ensure equal participation.
- Participants may struggle to express their feelings in a respectful manner. Provide guidance on non-violent communication techniques.
- Participants may get stuck in problem-focused thinking. Encourage them to focus on solutions and positive outcomes.
