Reverse Brainstorming

Reverse brainstorming flips the traditional approach by focusing on identifying problems first, then finding solutions. This technique helps teams uncover potential issues and challenges that might be overlooked.

What participants gain

  • Identify potential problems and challenges related to a product, service, or process.
  • Develop creative solutions to address those problems.
  • Improve critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Uncover hidden issues that might be overlooked in traditional brainstorming.

Materials needed

  • Whiteboard or flip chart
  • Markers
  • Timer
  • Product, service, or process to be analyzed

How to run Reverse Brainstorming, step by step

  1. Define the product, service, or process to be analyzed.
  2. Instead of asking 'How can we improve this?', ask 'How can we make this worse?' or 'What problems could arise with this?'
  3. Instruct participants to brainstorm potential problems and challenges related to the product, service, or process.
  4. Record all problems on the whiteboard or flip chart.
  5. Once a comprehensive list of problems has been generated, flip the script and ask 'How can we solve these problems?'
  6. Brainstorm potential solutions to each problem.
  7. Record all solutions on the whiteboard or flip chart.
  8. Discuss the problems and solutions and identify the most promising improvements.

Facilitator tips

  • Clearly define the product, service, or process being analyzed.
  • Encourage participants to think critically and identify potential problems.
  • Record all problems and potential solutions generated.

Common challenges

  • Participants struggle to identify problems - Provide examples of potential problems and encourage critical thinking.
  • Discussions become negative - Remind participants that the goal is to identify problems in order to find solutions.
  • Team gets stuck - Review the product/service and encourage new ideas

Running it virtually

Use a virtual whiteboard and create two columns: 'Problems' and 'Solutions'. Participants can add problems in the first column and then brainstorm solutions in the second column.

Expected results

A comprehensive list of potential problems and challenges related to a product, service, or process. Identification of innovative solutions and potential improvements.
