SCAMPER

SCAMPER is a checklist-based brainstorming technique that uses a set of prompts to stimulate creative thinking. It helps teams generate new ideas by modifying existing products, services, or processes.

What participants gain

  • Generate new ideas by modifying existing concepts.
  • Explore different perspectives and approaches to problem-solving.
  • Improve creative thinking and innovation skills.
  • Identify potential improvements and opportunities for growth.

Materials needed

  • SCAMPER checklist (printed or digital)
  • Whiteboard or flip chart
  • Markers
  • Timer
  • Product, service, or process to be improved

How to run SCAMPER, step by step

  1. Introduce the SCAMPER technique and explain each prompt: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify/Magnify/Minimize, Put to other uses, Eliminate, Reverse/Rearrange.
  2. Present the product, service, or process to be improved.
  3. Work through each SCAMPER prompt, one at a time.
  4. For each prompt, ask participants to generate ideas for how the product, service, or process could be modified or improved.
  5. Record all ideas on the whiteboard or flip chart.
  6. Discuss the ideas and identify the most promising solutions.
  7. Develop a plan for implementing the chosen solutions.

Facilitator tips

  • Introduce each SCAMPER prompt clearly and provide examples.
  • Encourage participants to think outside the box.
  • Record all ideas generated, even if they seem impractical at first.

Common challenges

  • Participants struggle to understand the prompts - Provide clear explanations and examples for each prompt.
  • Ideas become repetitive - Encourage participants to try different prompts and think from different angles.
  • Team gets stuck - Review previous prompts and try to combine ideas

Running it virtually

Use a virtual whiteboard and create a SCAMPER template with each prompt. Assign breakout rooms for smaller groups to brainstorm ideas for each prompt.

Expected results

A diverse range of ideas for modifying or improving a product, service, or process. Identification of innovative solutions and potential opportunities.
