Structural Cynefin Exploration
This method uses the Cynefin framework (a sense-making model) to categorize the biases identified in the previous session. Instead of a traditional privilege walk where people move based on their trauma, participants physically place the identified systemic biases into spatial quadrants representing Simple, Complicated, Complex, and Chaotic domains. This physical movement helps educators realize that a 'complex' bias (like implicit grading bias) requires a completely different approach (probe-sense-respond) than a 'simple' bias (like inaccessible document formats). It prevents the common failure of applying simplistic checklists to deeply rooted cultural issues.

How to run Structural Cynefin Exploration, step by step
- Clear the center of the room and use painter's tape to create a large four-quadrant grid on the floor (5 min).
- Place the four domain signs (Clear, Complicated, Complex, Chaotic) in the quadrants and briefly teach the Cynefin framework (15 min).
- Distribute the pink 'bias' sticky notes from the previous session evenly among the participants (5 min).
- Instruct participants to silently walk the grid and place their sticky notes into the quadrant they believe best represents the nature of that specific bias (15 min).
- Invite the group to walk around the completed grid, observing where the clusters of bias have formed (5 min).
- Form a circle around the grid and use a talking piece to discuss notes that ended up on the boundaries between quadrants, exploring the tension (20 min).
- Introduce the response strategies for each domain (e.g., Sense-Categorize-Respond for Clear; Probe-Sense-Respond for Complex) (15 min).
- Ask participants to select one 'Complex' bias and document a 'Probe' (small, safe-to-fail experiment) they could run in their classroom to understand it better (10 min).
Facilitator tips
- Emphasize that most deep-seated biases live in the 'Complex' domain, where there are no best practices, only emergent practices.
- If participants argue over a placement, celebrate this! The boundary discussions are where the deepest learning happens.
- Use physical movement to keep energy up; encourage people to literally step into the quadrants when discussing them.
- Remind participants that moving an issue from Complex to Complicated requires significant structural effort and analysis.
- Keep the explanation of Cynefin focused on practical application rather than deep academic theory to avoid cognitive overload.
Common challenges
- Participants try to force complex cultural issues into the 'Clear' domain to feel a sense of control - Gently challenge them by asking, 'If it were simple, wouldn't it be solved by now?'
- The theory of Cynefin feels too abstract - Anchor the theory immediately with highly specific examples from their own teaching context.
- Disagreement on categorization stalls the activity - Remind them that the framework is for sense-making, not perfect scientific classification.
- Low energy during the circle discussion - Ask participants to physically stand next to the sticky note they are referencing.
Running it virtually
Create a 2x2 matrix on a virtual whiteboard. Have participants drag and drop digital sticky notes. Use breakout rooms for the boundary discussions, as large group debates on virtual platforms often lead to disengagement.
