The AI Sandbox Duel

A rapid, structured hands-on sprint where participants run their pre-selected real-world tasks through LLM engines, comparing raw zero-shot responses with highly structured, context-rich prompting.

What participants gain

  • Differentiate between zero-shot prompting and structured context framing
  • Isolate the variables that cause AI outputs to succeed or fail
  • Formulate custom prompts that inject precise professional context and constraints

Materials needed

  • Laptops with active access to an LLM (ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot)
  • A4 Feedback-Grid Worksheets (1 per participant)
  • Fineliner pens
  • Digital countdown timer
  • Printed Prompt-Framing Cheat Sheets

How to run The AI Sandbox Duel, step by step

  1. Instruct participants to open their laptops and bring up their pre-selected real-world task description (2 min).
  2. Direct participants to spend three minutes silently writing down the manual steps and context they normally use to complete this task (3 min).
  3. Introduce the 'Zero-Shot vs. Structured Prompting' framework using the printed cheat sheets (3 min).
  4. Ask participants to run their first raw, unstructured prompt ('Write a draft for...') and paste the output into column A of their digital sheet (4 min).
  5. Guide participants to write a second, structured prompt using the 'Role-Task-Context-Constraint' formula (5 min).
  6. Execute the structured prompt in a new chat session and paste the output into column B (3 min).
  7. Instruct participants to pair up and spend four minutes comparing the qualitative differences between their Column A and Column B outputs (4 min).
  8. Facilitate a rapid, 3-minute plenary harvest of the single most effective prompting tweak discovered by the group (3 min).

Facilitator tips

  • ⏱ Timing: strict — if participants encounter login issues, immediately pair them with a neighbor to act as a co-pilot rather than wasting time troubleshooting.
  • Use the phrase: 'We are looking for the delta in quality, not the absolute perfection of the output.'
  • Keep the room energy high by playing low-volume, upbeat instrumental focus music during the prompting sprints.
  • Walk the room continuously to spot-check prompt structures and nudge participants who write prompts that are too short.
  • Remind participants to use a completely fresh chat session for their structured prompt to prevent context leakage.
  • If a participant's task is highly confidential, instruct them to abstract the company name and proprietary details before prompting.

Common challenges

  • Participants get stuck trying to log into their AI accounts — Solution: Have backup guest accounts ready or pair them up immediately.
  • Participants prompt with generic tasks instead of their own real work — Solution: Intervene early during step 1 and help them ground the task in their actual calendar.
  • The AI output is surprisingly good on the first try — Solution: Challenge the participant to increase the complexity or add tighter real-world constraints.
  • Participants get distracted reading long AI outputs — Solution: Enforce strict time limits and use a loud visual timer to keep them moving.

Running it virtually

Run in breakout pairs on Zoom. Use a shared Miro board with digital sticky notes replacing the physical worksheets, allowing participants to paste their prompt deltas directly onto a collective canvas.

Expected results

Participants produce two contrasting AI outputs for their real task and document the performance delta, identifying key contextual triggers that improve output quality.
